K-Drama Review: Kill Me, Heal Me (MBC, 2015)

In every incident involving any type of abuse, there are usually two parties involved: the perpetrator and the victim. However, in some cases, there is a third one: the witness. In this scenario, who is most culpable? Who ends up bearing the most amount of  guilt? Who gets to experience the most trauma? Who is most likely to end up being all messed up? These are the questions raised to me while I was watching through all 20 enthralling episodes of “Kill Me, Heal Me“, the series that had me zipping through it in just under one weekend. Palawan 2014: Puerto Princesa, The City in A Forest

(Oh, summer, you tease. You just love to bring on the rain, don’t you.) I first went to Palawan, particularly Puerto Princesa, back in 2008. We had a work-related convention, we worked for 4 days, and slummed around for 5-6 days. And by “slumming it”, I meant island-hopping, beach-combing, and living it up in a luxury resort called Club Noah Isabelle (which is now called Apulit Island) then heading over to El Nido for another couple of days. Those days remain etched in my memory because that’s the first time that I, a girl from the boondocks, spent THAT much amount of time in the water, lack of swimming skills notwithstanding.

K-Drama Review: Healer (KBS, 2014-2015)

When I saw photo stills and posters, I thought “Healer” was a show that involves the paranormal. You know, a hero with healing powers and stuff. So I pretty much ignored it. I was too engrossed with Pinocchio at the time. And when I ran out of stuff to watch, I saw that Healer has already ended and I noticed how everyone seemed to be raving about it. So I checked it out. One of the best k-drama decisions I ever made.

K-Drama Review: Misaeng (tvN, 2014)

“Misaeng” means “An Incomplete Life”. From the title, you would think this is an angst-filled melodrama. The typical Kdrama. Once in a while, it’s great to be proven wrong. And, in my case, to find a gem of a drama that will be firmly engraved on my virtual wall of “favorite dramas of all time”. In fact, if you are to ask me what Kdrama I would recommend anyone to watch, this would be the first thing I’d lay out on the table, no questions asked.

JapanEats: Daiki Suisan Kaiten Sushi (Dotonbori)

Think Japan, and one of the first things that will likely come to mind is sushi. In an earlier post, I shared about my first encounter with this quintessential Japanese food IN Japan when I hunted for Genki Sushi. That was an experience I enjoyed immensely, but that did not stop me from wanting to try a kaiten sushi place. And I’m glad I got to try it when I was in Osaka, right in the middle of Dotonbori.

Osaka, Japan 2014: Dotounbori Street

Foodies frequent Osaka to get a taste of its culinary delights, and one of the main destinations is Dotounbori Street, or what is often simply referred to as Dotonbori. Since it is basically clustered together with the Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade, Amerikamura, Namba Walk, and Den-Den Town a bit of a distance away, Dotonbori has become a major shopping, entertainment, and food destination. Chiba, Japan 2014: Chinahouse Keikarou

Another week, another bout with work, another batch of deadlines. Despite that, we have to start it right, and what better way to do that than to greet it with rainbows? Yes, rainbows. Granted, it’s just going to be one-fifth of a rainbow (….you don’t know what I’m talking about, do you, you-who-have-no-idea-who-Arashi-is? That’s all right, you get a free pass. This time.), but we all know there’s a lot of sparkles to go ’round, even from a single Arashi member. I’m talking about Aiba, and his family’s Chinese restaurant, Keikarou.

JapanEats: Okonomi Yukari (Akihabara)

Japan is quite possibly the WORST place to be for anyone who’s dieting. It’s a good thing that word does not exist in my vocabulary. Imagine having to restrain yourself from giving your palate a workout when you’re in the land of the most amazing (and appetizing-looking) sweets, takoyaki, all kinds of sushi, taiyaki, and okonomiyaki, to name a few. It’s a crime, I tell ya. A crime, which is a punishment in itself.

K-Drama Review: Bad Guys (OCN, 2014)

Earlier in 2014, I confess to having waded back into watching Kdramas via My Love From Another Star. Then I went through several Jdramas and then, while I was looking for something different from what I’ve seen so far especially in Kdramas, my eyes fell on a promotional poster of BAD GUYS, a production of OCN. Cable television in Korea seem to be stepping up their A-game, so now we see worthwhile dramas from production companies other than KBS, SBS and MBC.

And yay for short dramas! That’s what I like about dramas that are only around 10 to 16 episodes. These mid-length dramas have just the right length, IMO. Add more, and there’s a risk of it being dragged on too long, with one or two episodes doing nothing but acting as unnecessary fillers. Short but sweet; that’s a formula that almost always works.

JapanEats: Ramen @ Ikebukuro – Tairyuken Tokyo Ebisu

During my Tokyo trip, I opted to stay in the Ikebukuro area, which is a good decision, methinks, because it gives you easy access to everywhere. I only wish I had more time to explore the area, though, because it turns out to be quite huge (and has a lot to offer). One of them…. is that “cure-for-the-mother-of-all-hangovers”: ramen. And I first had my taste of Ikebukuro ramen at this small place called Tokyo Ebisu.

On the first day of the year (Happy 2015 everyone!) here’s a bit of a blog post detour. How’s the holiday weight gain coming along? Personally, it’s making me nervous especially when I think about having to wear my office uniform when I go back to work in a couple of days. JapanEats: Genki Sushi (Shibuya)

When you say “Shibuya”, the first things that come to mind include shopping, Shibuya 109, the “scramble”, Hachiko, Tsutaya and Starbucks. Places to eat are almost an afterthought. But while checking out blogs of those who have been there, I stumbled on one that mentioned Genki Sushi. True, it’s not the traditional sushi place, with a “conveyor belt”-like mechanism, but it is more than enough motivation for me to check it out. La Trinidad Eats: Dinawis Cafe & Restaurant

I first caught wind of this place when I saw it featured on local (then national) television for their coffee, which is a mix of arabica coffee (Benguet’s version of the barako) and chili or capsicum (sili). To say that I was intrigued would be an understatement, but the place is not the most accessible (or practical) for someone like me since it is alllll the way in Shilan. See, I work at Km. 0, I live at Km. 6, and the Dinawis Cafe and Restaurant is located at Km. 11. See my predicament?
